Save Money By Quitting Cigarette Smoking

If you quit smoking today, you can save bags full of money. Several people and instances have already tried to determine how much savings you can have if you quit smoking, but of course that will differ from smoker to smoker as well as be influenced by other factors associated with smoking such as health matter.

In the work place

Smokers sometimes get a hot deal, not making money, but not being hired by Companies.

They may say it out loud or they may not, but they prefer non-smokers because

1. smokers take more sick days off.
2. they fall ill more and
3. their family falls ill more.
4. they have a shorter attention span as they have to go out for a smoke every couple of hours,
5. they have higher health insurance premiums that some companies hate to foot and
6. they may pass respiratory infections to co-workers.

By quitting cigarette smoking you can widen your horizons as far as jobs are concerned and then have a greater chance of sticking around.

How to decrease your assets’ value

Have you ever thought that a smell that you as a smoker cannot smell can influence the value of for instance your house? Because non-smokers are not willing to buy a house filled with the stench of cigarette smoke. The people living there may have gotten accustomed to the smoky smell, but for non-smokers the carpets, drapes and furniture reek of cigarette smoke and it can either result in a slower sale of the house or not getting as much money as you would like for it.

The second most valuable asset after your house is most probably your car. Is the inside of your car smelling like your house …. Full of smoke? What an easy way to decrease the value of your car ! If you want to get more money for your home and car down the road - and who doesn’t - quit cigarette smoking today.

Even places like an online auction site can be an unlikely place where your smoking can lose you money. Many bidders prefer stuff from smoke-free homes when they for instance buy toys for their children. If you have kids and you are looking for toys and other stuff online on auction sites, you will undoubtedly see many listings which highlight the fact that their bedding or plush toys come from smoke-free homes. They expect to and often do get better money just because they do not smoke.

Looking smart can cost you more

Because your clothes are always smelling of smoke, it may be that cleaning them professionally 0r having them laundered, might cost you more than just an airing. A few dollars here and there may not seem like much now, but multiply the number of extra dry cleaning items by the number of weeks you have smoked and you will not be too pleased with the answer.

Personal costs

Smoke affects your breath as well as your teeth. Bad breath and yellow teeth can cost you money, even if it is only a packet of mints. Factor every expense, from the value of your home to a pack of breath mints and add it up. Multiply it by the number of years you have been smoking and it can shock you.

Why not take up this challenge: You are a smoker and your kids are secondary smokers, let x-rays be taken of your lungs as well as your kids’ lungs. Then compare it with x-rays from a non-smoker. Your kids’ x-rays might just be the reason why you quit smoking.

I like many other fathers out there, used to leave shopping for the children up to my wife. She would take them to the store and I would get to sit on the couch and enjoy a football game with no interruption. Sadly, that’s all been changed thanks to the limited funds available at my kid’s school to supply the sports gear that they need. It is up to the parents to purchase what was once readily provided by the school and now I’m the one that makes the trips to the store with the kids in tow.

My wife and I have always encouraged our children to participate in sports because they teach them about teamwork and working hard to achieve their goals. These types of lessons will hopefully help them later on in life, as they attend college and then enter their chosen professions. Prior to budget cuts, getting their needed equipment was not a financial consideration for the parents. Now, in order for my children to continue to play their favorite sports, we have to cut down on other expenses to be able to afford the expensive gear.

Two of my children play hockey and this type of sport is rough on the equipment, so replacing it has become a fact of life. Just the cost of the skates alone practically has me looking in the want ads for another job. Even though we buy equipment made of good quality, my kids are constantly growing, so we are guaranteed to have to replace items with every season.

Then there’s my own gear that I use to go hunting with. I also fish and play golf. My wife plays tennis with her friends and between all of us; we should own stock in sporting goods companies. As it is, the sales clerks in the store that we frequent knows us by our first names.

We made sure to get on their mailing list for catalogs because they often contain coupons that will save money on the things that we buy. I have to admit that I love getting these catalogs because they keep me up to date on the new advancements in sporting gear. While I certainly can’t afford to replace my golf clubs every time they come up with an improved one, I can at least put them on my Christmas list with the slim hope of getting one of them. Recently, a friend of mine who is in the same boat that I am, told me about a sporting good supplier that sells high quality used equipment.

I don’t have a problem with buying used equipment, as long as it works well and will save me money. From what I understand, they will also buy my used gear or sell it for me on a contingency basis. This is a great relief because it will save us a bundle and I won’t have to get that second job after all.

Big Money in Kid’s Properties

What is a Property? For most people the term “Property” generally brings to mind real estate or a belonging. In the world of entertainment or licensing and merchandising, a Property refers to a character or a group of characters. In other words, an Intellectual Property. Well known examples are Mickey Mouse as a single Property or the Teenage Ninja Turtles as a group Property.

Properties can be utilized or arise in a book, a comic book, as an image on a cup or can be the focus of a television program or can be utilized in a television commercial.

Billions of dollars have been generated since Mickey Mouse developed in the wonderful mind of Walt Disney and of course the Disney Corporation is the epitome of intellectual Property rights that all others aspire to.

What does a Property consist of? This is where matters become confusing. If you can imagine in your mind, a pizza pie that has been cut up into slices. Or, better still, take a sheet of paper and draw a pizza or a circle. Then, divide the circle into parts – let’s say sixteenths. Each one of those sixteen pieces represents a different part of the whole and each one of those pieces can be sold off or licensed, as is more the common practice.

The following are some of the more common categories that are licensed off as part of a Property; publishing, music, board games, electronic games, clothing, television, action figures, plush dolls, remote control toys, play sets, cards, greeting cards, educational products and so on.

Obviously, the more popular the Property, the more licensing fees are generated and the wider the range of products. A wonderful example of a Property that spun off from a first book is Harry Potter. I’m sure that when J.K. Rowling was slogging over her first book in a London cafe, she had no idea that Harry would become a world-wide phenomena spawning a huge array of children’s products.

If you have an idea for children that you think kids around the world will crave after, get started. The North American licensing and merchandising market totaled sales of over $60 Billion in 2006 and North American kids spent over $200 Billion in the same year. How to get started you ask? If you have an idea for a character and have limited artistic abilities, hire an illustrator or an art school student to take from your mind and transpose it onto paper. If you enjoy telling stories that kids like, even if your writing abilities are marginal, write them down.  The point is - get started. Don’t imagine you are going to be an overnight success. It takes hard work, long hours and a lot of money to become and overnight success, however, if you can develop your idea into something kids enjoy or better still want, you are halfway there.

Running low on cash to complete shopping for Christmas Gifts for your kids, and hoping that you’ll have money to pick up the last minute Christmas gifts you need?

Many things in life that are “Free” are overlooked or ignored. As people of habit we tend to do the same things over and over again. We shop at the same stores. We buy the same products. We shop out of need rather than planning. We are in a rush and shop without taking advantage of bargains and sales.

At the grocery store we shop for what is in our heads or on the shopping list after work, and then go home and prepare dinner. We ignore the free weekly sales brochure at the entrance of the store. We buy the same brand name of soup without comparing prices of soups in the same area. We buy bread and mayonnaise for sandwiches that will go with the soup.

So what did you miss? You missed a lot of savings that would provide you with EXTRA MONEY for shopping for Christmas gifts. If you would have picked up the weekly sales brochure at the entrance, you might have seen that Campbell’s Chucky Soup was on sale….Buy 2 Get 3 Free. So instead of buying your regular brand of soup at approximately the same price with no sale you could have SAVED MONEY.

You also may have found that instead of the loaf of bread that you normally purchase which was not on sale, you could have purchased a Brownberry 100% Wheat Bread and got ONE FREE (this also is a healthy made bread). As for the Mayonnaise, you could have just grabbed any jar including Hellman’s. You overlooked the fact that one of the jars of Hellman’s offered for the same price included “FREE 33% More mayonnaise” …10 ounces for free.

Hopefully when you shop you carry the store’s loyalty card that not only provides you with additional savings on other products throughout the store, but provides savings to you and your wallet on every visit. There was also a page of grocery breakfast items that were on sale and adding another $1.00 off each product when you bought any five of these named products for an additional savings of $5.00.

On Mondays, Dominicks/Safeway offers a rotisserie chicken for $5.00 and on Friday a pizza with one additional topping for $6.99 (you can even call and order it in advance, and have it ready when you arrive). This means more savings each time you shop with your loyalty card and that saved money can keep you shopping for your last minute Christmas gifts.

If you really took advantage of the sales on the soup, the bread, and the breakfast items by buying in bulk, you saved money not only this trip but also on your future grocery trips. On a recent trip to Dominicks/Safeway I took advantage of these sales, and filled my cupboard with 10 cans of soup (6 free) and 4 loaves of bread for my freezer and 5 breakfast items that included juice, sausages, coffee. Before swiping my loyalty card at the cash register, the total was $53.01. After swiping the card, the total was $19.62 which represented a savings of 63%. Dollar wise the savings amounted to $33.39.

Remember the Christmas gifts for your kids or last minute Christmas gifts needed to be purchased. This savings of $33.39 might make the difference for you and your loved ones. Feel free to take advantage of one of my many tips on how to save money this Christmas Shopping Season, and enjoy a good hot cup of coffee with toast and sausages for breakfast, and soup and a sandwich for lunch knowing that you got everyone on your list a personalized Christmas gift.

Every parent wants to send their child off school with a good, healthy lunch. Mine did. However, many parents mistake a good lunch as one filled with attractively-packaged, sugary, expensive items. This should not be the case. Packing a brown bag lunch will be less expensive than having your child buy lunch. Also, on top of saving money by making lunches this article explains, through personal experience, how to save even more money by watching what you put into those lunches.

My typical lunch growing up was a PB&J sandwich, a bag of chips, some variation of fruit (applesauce, fresh fruit, or yogurt), and two cookies. I had this lunch, with a few changes once in a while, every day at school… for twelve years. It’s not a huge lunch but I survived, my parents saved money, and you and your kids can too.

So, you’re probably asking, “Well then, what should I put into my child’s lunch?” The answer begins at the grocery store. Divide the lunch into four categories- a main item (sandwich or leftover pizza), a side (chips, crackers), a fruit/veggie or variation (apple, banana, applesauce), and a small dessert (cookies). This will ensure that the lunch has enough to fill its owner and give him or her the necessary nutrients to succeed in school. To start saving money you need to follow these easy steps:

  1. Avoid expensive, unnecessary items (i.e. juice boxes, soda, fruit roll-ups, and other sugary packaged foods)

    1. Drinks. Kids do not need juice boxes or sodas in their lunch. Every school and business place has some sort of a drinking fountain or water dispenser. Water is the best drink for you and best of all, it’s free! I never had in 12 years of school any kind of drink in my lunch. It saved my parents tons of money and forced me to be healthier.

    2. Treats. Avoid those unnecessary treats like fruit roll-ups or ding dongs. These items are full of sugar, are not filling, can cause obesity, and are very expensive. Eliminate these from your shopping list. I still believe something sweet is a good way to end a meal so instead replace the expensive items with cheap store brand cookies. They come in large packs, are cheap, and taste very close to the brand name. This way, you can stick two little cookies in a baggie and still have a treat in your lunch (except this way it will be a lot cheaper). By the way, if you are worried about the store brand thing, it’s a cookie! It can’t taste that much worse than a brand name cookie.

  2. Buy your items in bulk

    1. Sandwiches. If you’re going to be buying sandwich items such as peanut butter or lunch meat, buy the biggest package possible for the best price. You’re going to be using it every day and that means it probably will not be going to waste. Buying a small jar of peanut butter every week or two will end up costing a whole lot more over the course of a year than if you bought a big jar that lasted a month or two.

    2. Side Items. Buy the big boxes of chips or Costco-sized packages of individual applesauce. Smaller packages are going to cost much more than buying the big box or bag. It might cost a little more up front but will save lots of money in the end.

  3. Be Smart.

    1. Buy the cheapest bread. Your kids will not know a difference.

    2. Shop Around. Invest some time viewing the ads that come in your local newspaper before going to the grocery store. Clip some coupons and be sure you are buying at the cheapest price. A box of chips might be on sale for three bucks at one store and regularly-priced at five at another. It might take a little more time but you’ll know it is worth it when you start to see the money you save.

    3. Store brands. Stick to the store brands (unless it is in fact horrible, but in most cases, they won’t be).

    4. Lay down the law. If your kids are with you in the store, tell them that if they ask for it, they won’t get it.

Once you have your groceries, it is time to pack the lunch.

  1. Have the kids make their own lunch. They will appreciate the lunch much more once lunchtime rolls around. It will give them a sense of accomplishment and force them not to take you for granted. I’ve made my own lunch since the second grade so do not think your child can not.

  2. Set limits. Set a limit for what each person can bring each day. If you decide to buy cookies, make sure to let everyone know that two is the maximum per day, etc.

Note: If your children are used to much bigger lunches full of sugary treats, they might be upset at first. Do not give in. Remember, you are saving money and helping to ensure your child does not become obese.

Follow the steps mentioned above and I guarantee you will save plenty of money.
